The Advantages of Synthetic V/s Natural Emery
Emery is a naturally existing rock that comprises mainly of aluminum oxide. It is abrasive in nature and is used to remove unwanted material mostly from the surface of metals in order to give them a polished appearance. Incidentally, it is the second hardest material after diamond.
- A major drawback of pure natural aluminum oxide or natural emery is that the milling process fails to produce the surface finish that is required at times. This is on account of the uneven grit sizes that are present in the natural form. This was corrected by the synthetic method that produces grit of uniform size and greater hardness. Besides, these are first tested in a laboratory before being marketed.
- The Advantages, however, these days is that Emery is made in a synthetic manner using silicon carbide as the main substitute for aluminum oxide as it is stronger and a more durable compound. The main advantage of using silicon carbide is that it is a much harder material and sharper than aluminum oxide which occurs naturally in the emery stone.
- Silicon carbide has sharper grains; in fact at times they appear like needles which wear out faster producing a newer and fresher cutting edge faster. It is these advantages that it smoothes out surfaces much more rapidly and delivers a far superior finish, besides, it also cuts much faster than most other abrasives made from aluminum oxide.
- Another favored choice is cutting edges made from ceramic. Although, it is more expensive than aluminum oxide or silicon carbide it is much tougher and more durable. It is also known to retain its hardness throughout the cutting process. This material however, is mainly used for producing high quality belts and disks.
- Other forms of synthetic emery are a combination of Corundum, Magnesium Oxide and Boron Carbide that are known to produce good results.
- Synthetic forms of emery are nowadays used to manufacture emery belts and wheels which are more versatile and can be used for multiple purposes. There are several Emery wheel manufacturers in India as they are widely used across many industries.
The main reason for this is the abundant supply of the basic raw material, namely Bauxite or Aluminum Oxide which is sourced from Jamnagar is of good quality. Many of the well known suppliers and manufacturers of Emery products are found in this region.
Emery Powder and Wheels Suppliers in India
